Our Catholic schools are treasured for our commitment and dedication to forming the whole child: mind, body, and spirit. Our ardent desire for all students to grow in their faith and excel in their academics, is supported by a foundation of social emotional skills that build character and prepare students for success in school and in life. Fostering skills, such as resilience, trustworthiness, growth mindset, and conflict resolution are essential to equip our youth with the tools they need to navigate today’s complex world.
SEL is the process through which all young people and adults acquire and apply the knowledge, skills, and attitudes to develop healthy identities, manage emotions, and achieve personal and collective goals, feel and show empathy for others, establish and maintain supportive relationships, and make responsible and caring decisions.
Research and experience reveal that students with well-developed social skills and emotional awareness do better socially and academically. These important skills lead to a higher level of engagement and improved overall mental and physical wellbeing.
Catholic schools, as part of their mission, excel in building community, nurturing a faith-filled, family atmosphere where each person is dignified and celebrated as a unique child of God. Our approach to SEL is firstly rooted in this beautiful expression of our faith, where the culture embodies our gospel values and each student is loved and cherished. Service learning, one of the pillars of Catholic Education, is an essential part of our SEL approach. In prayerfully and selflessly serving others, students experience boundless social emotional growth in empathy, tolerance, respect, hard work, determination, and love for humanity. In addition to this lived experience, students are implicitly taught the 5 core-competencies of SEL through biblically based SEL curriculum. We believe this comprehensive approach equips our students to be the future leaders of our church and our world.
Children and youth are taught to identify and maintain appropriate physical, emotional, spiritual and sexual boundaries; recognize when boundary violations are about to occur; and demonstrate how to act when boundary violations are threatened or violated. Along with a strong parent component, the program teaches children that God is always with them, especially in difficult situations.
Friendzy teaches the five-core competencies of social-emotional learning (SEL) through the lens of Scripture. Teaching friendship skills, God’s design for relationship and community, helps students manage their emotions, improve their ability to set and achieve positive goals, feel and show empathy for others, maintain positive relationships, and make responsible decisions.
