Emmanuel – God is with us!
My Dear Brothers and Sisters,
I want to wish each one of you a very Blessed and Holy Christmas. This year's Christmas is a very special time because it falls within the Jubilee Year of Mercy. The Incarnation of the word of God, Jesus Christ, is indeed the Incarnation of God’s mercy. So often in our lives we struggle with forgiveness; forgiveness of ourselves; forgiveness of others; forgiveness of the past; forgiveness toward those who have in some ways hurt us. This year, however, we are given a special grace to encounter the Mercy of God.
This Christmas, I ask you to open your hearts to the mystery of God's love. Faith takes us beyond reason and understanding. Beyond what we understand, we can in faith open our hearts to God's mercy and ask for the strength and the courage to show mercy.
We should center our corporal and spiritual works of mercy on the person rather than on the work itself. Also with forgiveness, let us not dwell on the offense that we have experienced or perceived to have experienced, but let us look into the eyes of each person and see them as God sees them, offering them encouragement, mercy or forgiveness.
I pray that today and throughout the Christmas season you will have the opportunity to be with family and friends, and that you will have time to spend renewing relationships and healing any injuries of the past. This is what the child of Bethlehem expects of us.
I assure you of a place in my heart during this Christmas season and always. With best wishes for Christmas and a Happy New Year and asking God's special grace upon you during this Year of Mercy, I am
Sincerely and fraternally yours in Christ,
Most Rev. Wm. Michael Mul y, STL, DD
