Some 400 exiting students from 13 Catholic schools in the Diocese of Corpus Christi participated in the “Liturgy to Begin the School Year” on Wednesday morning, Aug. 24, with Bishop Michael Mulvey presiding. Bishop Emeritus Edmond Carmody, pastors of parochial schools and other diocesan priests, concelebrated. It was the first time since 2019 that Catholic schools gathered for this celebration due to the pandemic.
“PledgeFest 2022”, the annual Fall On-Air fundraiser benefiting 89.5HD K L U X is on the air. The 5-day event, which launches Aug. 29, is one of the primary fundraisers for the local non-commercial station. Local dignitaries, guests, station personalities and volunteers will be making appeals and manning the phones, taking pledges from listeners during each of the three daily segments during the campaign. The Fundraiser will conclude at 4 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 2.

Michael Howell presided over the Mass. Msgr. Thomas P. Feeney, Father Dominic Hoan Nguyen, Father Joseph Tung Tran, and Father Peter Nghi Pham concelebrated.

The Office of Catholic Schools hosted a Professional Development Day for teachers in the Diocese of Corpus Christi on Aug. 9 at St. John Paul High School. Guest speaker Dr. Richard Grant, a licensed psychologist who specializes in Myers-Briggs consulting and training, challenged Catholic school teachers to learn about themselves and each other’s personality types.
The excitement was palatable for students and teachers as they eased into their first day of the 2022-2023 school year in the Diocese of Corpus Christi. Most schools started their first day of school on Aug. 11, except for Incarnate Word Academy (IWA) elementary, middle and high school levels, which began on Aug. 8.
The Eucharistic Miracles of the World Exhibition recently brought this young man’s deep devotion to the Eucharist to the Diocese of Corpus Christi. His work was displayed at St. Joseph Church in Beeville on Aug. 9.
Incarnate Word Academy welcomed students and families to the campus for their annual Angel Check-In Registration on Aug. 4. New and returning students and families met with friends and teachers, collected spirit clothing, and completed forms for the registration process.
The Office of Catholic Schools begins the school year with a Spiritual Day for diocesan and parochial teachers in the Diocese of Corpus Christi on Aug. 8. The event was held in the Cafetorium at St. John Paul High School. The event began with the celebration of Mass by newly ordained Father Charles Silvas, who happens to be an alumnus of St. John Paul High School.

Six sisters from the Pax Christi Institute were honored at a Mass and reception for 50 and 25 years of religious life. The event was held at the Pax Christi Liturgical Retreat Center on Aug. 3.

Our Eucharistic celebrations last month were a great success and triumph in celebrating the Lord’s promise: “I am with you always…” I want to express my sincere gratitude to all of you who assisted in the organization and execution of the events and for being a part of this very special moment in the life of our diocese. It proved to be a celebration that was filled with many blessings.
Sister Maria Luisa Peña, 87, of Kingsville passed away July 31 in Kingsville, Texas. She was born on Aug. 25, 1934, in Robstown to Isidoro and Concepcion Peña.

Parishioners at Our Lady of Mount Carmel in Portland welcomed Bishop Michael Mulvey as he celebrated Mass and blessed the newly renovated Perpetual Adoration Chapel on July 16. “It was a special day for our parish community because not only were we celebrating the 30th anniversary and rededication of our Perpetual Adoration Chapel,” said Norma Ochoa, a parishioner at Our Lady of Mount Carmel said. “It was also the Feast Day of Our Lady of Mount Carmel,”
