Corpus Christi Cathedral was standing room only on Nov. 20, as the faithful led by Bishop Michael Mulvey gathered to honor hundreds of young people for their long-standing commitment and dedication as altar servers at their local parishes in the Diocese of Corpus Christi.
Father Roy Kalayil, the pastor at Our Lady Star of the Sea Parish, said he feels a powerful presence in the sanctuary when he prays there. He is convinced it is due to the extensive collection of relics near the altar. Our Lady Star of the Sea is blessed to have over 300 sacred relics —most of them are first class relics.

Y por la mayor parte de esos años, Elena ha sido fiel miembro de las Guadalupanas. Un día, Roberto que anhelaba no solo estar más cerca de su esposa, sino también mostrar su amor y reverencia por la Santísima Madre, dijo: “Siento un gran amor y devoción por la Virgen de Guadalupe, entonces, cuando fue sugerido, sin ninguna duda, me hice miembro de las Guadalupanas junto a mi esposa. Me encantó la idea”.
The tradition of Lessons and Carols dates to the late 1800s, and it continues at the Corpus Christi Cathedral this Christmas. It is a dramatic interplay of scripture passages and music that balances familiar melodies which swell to dramatic crescendos, building a sense of expectation and anticipation of the birth of Jesus.
The voices of youth from St. John Paul II High School choir and the Cathedral Youth Chorale set the stage for the first State of the Diocese on Oct. 26. They sang of unity in Christ through Word and Eucharist and of sending forth the gathered believers. Director of Music Alex Oldroyd from Corpus Christi Cathedral led them on piano with the musical arrangement, “We Are One in Christ,” by James J. Chepponis (originally Gustav Holst’s “Thaxted”).
Although it was a cold and overcast day, more than 150 youth, young adults, youth ministers, and volunteers participated at Lisbon in CC, World Youth Day diocesan celebration at St. John Paul High School campus.
Incarnate Word Academy Middle Level participated in six rounds of a professional etiquette contest, the Amazing Angel Shake. The rounds focused on manners, discipline, respect, and professional conduct. Students were introduced to the nuances of professional human interaction as they learned important soft skills such as giving a proper handshake, providing high-quality answers in interviews, and remaining composed under pressure.
Incarnate Word Academy Alumni and current families and friends gathered in the James R. Dougherty, Jr. Center to celebrate the annual All Saints Day Mass which is being combined with a Memorial tribute this year.
Rev. Dr. Bruno Mikolajczyk, Ph.D., a retired priest of the Diocese of Corpus Christi, died Friday, Nov. 18, 2022, at his home. He was 88. Funeral arrangements are pending at this time.
Incarnate Word Academy welcomes Will Paul to Angel Territory as the new Head Varsity Basketball Coach. Paul has prepped IWA’s Boys Varsity Basketball team to play a great first game of the season against St. Dominic Savio this Friday, Nov. 11, at 7 p.m.
Over forty-five young men between the ages of 15 and 22 were accompanied by priests from various parishes across the diocese to enjoy an evening of questions, answers, and stories about hearing and answering God’s call to the priesthood.
Bishop Michael Mulvey officiated the All Souls Day Mass in the chapel at Seaside Memorial Park and Funeral Home on Nov. 2. Those who came to Mass brought framed photographs of departed loved ones and the photos filled two tables on each side of the altar.
Archbishop Timothy P. Broglio of the Archdiocese for the Military Services, USA, was elected president of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) during the Fall Plenary Assembly in Baltimore. Archbishop William E. Lori of Baltimore was elected as USCCB vice president. They succeed Archbishop José H. Gomez of Los Angeles and Archbishop Allen H. Vigneron of Detroit, who are concluding their terms as Conference president and vice president, respectively.
Incarnate Word Academy High School’s football team made history on Oct. 28 as they played the first-ever official six-man football game in the school’s history. The IWA Angels played against St. Augustine High School’s Knights on Oct. 28 in Laredo.
St. John Paul II High School and Bishop Garriga Middle Preparatory School are having a Live Nativity with scenes leading up to the Lord’s birth. It will take place on Nov. 27, 28 and 29 from 6-8 p.m. at 3036 Saratoga Blvd. Begins at the Bishop Garriga School entrance.

Catholic schools came together as one at the St. John Paul II High School and Bishop Garriga Middle Preparatory School annual homecoming parade on Oct. 25. Schools from around the Diocese participated in the event. The parade included the DJ music from “Dance Til Dawn,” and various food trucks were there for people to enjoy.
