The 18th Annual Grandparents and Other Relatives Raising Children Conference held on Sept. 20 was the most well attended event yet, according to Stephanie Bonilla who heads the Office for Safe Environment and Child and Family Resources in the Diocese of Corpus Christi. There were more than 300 people who attended the event in the Watergarden Room at the American Bank Center.
Today, Sept. 27, several dozen bishops across the United States are joining Pope Francis as he launched the two-year “Share the Journey” campaign, holding events and reaching out to support migrants and refugees in their own dioceses as the campaign aims to raise awareness about their plight worldwide.

On Sept. 25, every student from St. Pius X School eagerly waited while firemen hoisted up the fourth, fifth and sixth grade STREAM project—an egg. The event was held in the school's parking lot and the Corpus Christi Fire Department helped make the project legit by lending out their fire truck and ladder.
Hurricane Harvey tore through Texas destroying homes, business, churches and lives. Most people know that Houston, the country’s fourth largest city, was devastated by the storm. However, it was not the only city in the Lone Star state that suffered. Harvey also barreled through the city of Rockport, leaving behind uprooted trees and piles of rubble where buildings once stood. Rockport’s Sacred Heart Catholic School had just opened its doors to students for the new school year when Harvey came through, making it unsuitable to hold classes.
St. John Paul II football team improves to a Record of 3-1 on Sept. 21. The final score 58-13 required a lot of good offense. Offensive Standouts were Homecoming King Ryan Mota who had a stellar night and earned the title “King” for the night as he had 180 all-purpose yards and four touch downs.

On Wednesday, Sept. 20, Bishop Michael Mulvey blessed the new Newman Catholic Student Center in Beeville. The Center is conveniently located across the street from Coastal Bend College, making it an inviting place for students who live in the dorms.
When Boy Scout Troop 157 at St. Pius X Parish in Corpus Christi learned that the troops in Aransas Pass and Rockport had severe damage to their meeting locations and had lost their Scout supplies they wanted to help support the recovery of their fellow Scouts. Troop 157 decided to donate all of the profits, $2,000, from their biggest annual fundraiser.
According to Delma Trejo, executive director of The Ark, depending on the number of children living at the children’s shelter, costs can run anywhere from $4,000-$8000 per day. The Texas Department of Family and Protective Services supplies about 65 percent of the operating revenue with the balance coming in the form of grants, donations and fundraisers like the annual gala held on Sept. 14.
Sister Helen Dolores Losleben, who taught at St. John School in Robstown from 1979-84, died on Sept. 12 in Mother Theodore Hall, St. Mary-of-the-Woods. She was born in Anaheim, California on Feb. 15 to George and Ida Kaiser Losleben and was baptized Helen Marie.
The Newman Center community at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi will host “Pasta with A Priest”, an open Q&A with chaplains Father David Bayardo and Father Eric Chapa, on Thursday, Sept. 21. Students are asked to come prepared with any questions they may have about the Catholic faith, the priesthood or the chaplains themselves.
St. Pius X Catholic School celebrated Grandparents Day on Wednesday, Sept. 13, with Mass and a reception in the classrooms where grandparents shared stories with students and received special art projects that were made for them by the students. A large showing of grandparents, great grandparents and surrogate grandparents participated.

In preparation for the Feast of Our Lady of Consolation on Sept. 16, the parish baring her name in Vattman is holding a novena with special speakers for each day of the novena, culminating with the Vicar General of the Diocese of Corpus Christi, Father James Stembler, celebrating Mass at the church at 7 p.m. on the feast day. Father Stembler’s homily will be on “Our Lady of Consolation: A Role Model for us to be Comforters and Consolers.”
