Catholic Charities of Corpus Christi and over 100 volunteers unloaded truckloads of perishables, cleaning supplies, water, diapers and much more collected from Brownsville and McAllen on Aug. 30.

Due to several Coastal Bend schools closing indefinitely due to damages caused by Hurricane Harvey, Incarnate Word Academy will be accepting displaced students from grades K5 through 12 at half the annual tuition rate. Based on capacity, limited spaces are available and will be filled on a first come first served basis.

Sacred Heart Elementary School in Rockport suffered catastrophic damage when Hurricane Harvey made landfall. Officials of the Diocese of Corpus Christi have determined that the school cannot operate in its current condition. Accordingly, arrangements are being made for families to enroll their children in the Catholic school of the town they are living in, including Corpus Christi.

The full impact of Hurricane Harvey on churches, schools and other structures in the Diocese of Corpus Christi is still being evaluated, but as of now buildings in the coastal communities north of Corpus Christi suffered extensive damage. Bishop Michael Mulvey reminded the faithful, in a life broadcast over the diocese’s Facebook page, that these are times that “require a deep sense of faith.”

On the outskirts of every major city in Texas, tiny towns with proud citizens make their home. Places like Woodsboro, Bayside, Refugio provide a simple life for hard-working people. Those people fear they may have been forgotten in Harvey's aftermath. "There's a group in Woodsboro right now, we're here in Refugio, and now we are going to go to Bayside to go help," said a volunteer with St. Joseph Catholic Church in Alice.

On Aug. 18, Catholic school principals and program and athletic directors attended the Safe Environment and Human Resource issues presentation as part of professional development program for the 2017-18 school year. The presentation was held at St. Patrick's Our Lady of Knock Hall.

Bishops in the United States, and around the world, are joining Pope Francis on Sept. 27 in launching a global campaign to support people fleeing their homes seeking a decent and safe life for their families. This campaign, called “Share the Journey,” will respond to some of the most desperate of God’s children. The initiative is a two-year campaign.

The Corpus Christi Chorale will present the Southwest premiere performance of Messa di Requiem, by internationally renowned composer-conductor William Doherty, at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 10, in the Performing Arts Center of Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi. This performance will be augmented by free master-class instruction offered by Doherty beginning at 11 a.m. Oct. 10 in the Performing Arts Center.

Bishop Michael Mulvey formally installed Father Piotr Koziel as pastor of Our Lady of Mount Carmel in Portland on Saturday, Aug. 19. The bishop appointed Father Koziel pastor on May 10 to replace Msgr. Mark Chamberlain who retired after 49 years as a priest and 19 years as pastor at the Portland Parish.

After over a year of training, CHRISTUS Spohn Health System celebrated the graduation of three chaplains who will help care for the spiritual needs of south Texas patients and their families.

Cindy Morin of Corpus Christi has a unique talent, making rosaries for individuals from flowers that they provide from an event, such as a wedding, quinceañera, Communion or funeral. She makes rosaries from any event where flowers are used.

Our Lady of Consolation in Vattmann will pray a Holy Rosary and celebrate a Memorial Mass on Friday Aug. 25 in memory of Father Peter Paul Antony, who died on Aug. 1 in his native India. The Holy Rosary will be at 5:30 p.m., followed by Mass at 6 p.m. Father Antony faithfully served the parish and its missions of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Riviera and Sacred Heart in Ricardo, for 11 years.

The Cathedral Music Ministry of Corpus Christi Cathedral, in its 33rd season, announced openings for new members in four. Limited openings will be filled for the Pontifical Chorale (adult choir), the Youth Chorale (grades 8-12), Choristers (grades 4-7) and Cherub Choir (grades 1-3).

The Serra Club of Corpus Christi hosted a “Family Seminarian Dinner” on Aug. 6 at the St Pius X Youth Center. The Serra Club exists to promote vocations and support seminarians and their families. The dinner was held to extend well wishes to seminarians as they continue another year in the seminary.

Local non-commercial radio station KLUX 89.5HD will hold its annual on-the air, fall “Pledge Fest” fundraiser beginning Monday, Aug. 21. The two-day event will feature KLUX air personalities and guests making on-air appeals for support and taking phone pledges for the listener supported station.

In-line skating was a habit that a couple of nuns thought they might have to give up when they took their vows of obedience, chastity and poverty. "When I entered, I left my Rollerblades at home, thinking, 'I'm not going to use them,'" Sister Caritas Sparke told ABC affiliate KIII. But Sparke was mistaken.
