During his transitional diaconate year, Msgr. Roger Smith became fearful of making a commitment. Four of the priests in his formation left the priesthood and got married. Then a priest he knew asked him "What would you do if you only had a year to live?" The answer came quickly; he would go ahead and get ordained because he knew he would not mess it up in a year.

On Dec. 13, 2015, Bishop Michael Mulvey stood in front of the Holy Doors in the Corpus Christi Cathedral, formally opening them for the "Holy Year of Mercy" to be observed through Nov. 20. As part of the Holy Year, a "Door of Mercy" was opened at Cathedral Churches around the world and at other designated churches within each diocese. The holy doors were to evoke the concept of forgiveness and reconciliation, which is the main focus of the Holy Year of Mercy.
Cristian De La Rosa, Troop 289 Eagle Scout candidate held a Diaper Drive for C.C. Hope House. Cristian and scouts from Troop 289 delivered 19,316 diaper to C.C. Hope House to help them in their ministry to our community.
The Office of Youth Ministry of the Diocese of Corpus Christi held its annual High School Youth Spectacular on Oct. 22 at the American Bank Center. Though the Youth Spectacular has taken place for 34 years, this year’s schedule was different and special because the youth took part in a pilgrimage from the American Bank Center to the Corpus Christi Cathedral to walk through the Holy Doors opened for the Year of Mercy.

Members of the Corpus Christi ISD Police Department visited Holy Family School during Red Ribbon Week to help students celebrate a drug free life. Officers with the mobile unit, a K-9 officer and other school police officers showed children the danger of drugs. Children also saw what they could accomplish if they live a drug free life.

A groundbreaking ceremony for a new 6,285 sq.-ft. addition to the Newman Center adjacent to Texas A&M University, Corpus Christi will take place tomorrow, Oct. 26, at 12:45 p.m., at 7002 Ocean Drive. The Center serves students at Texas A&M University, Corpus Christi and Del Mar College, as well as other young adults not enrolled either school.
On Sunday, Oct. 23, Bishop Michael Mulvey joined parishioners at Sacred Heart in Sinton to celebrate 100 years as a parish. He told those gathered at the 10:30 a.m. Mass, "We can’t just live the past, we must learn from the past and be grateful, but we must live that same faith today and look forward to an eternal life with God."
Pax Christi Sister Consuelo Flores Zamora, 88, died on Wednesday, Oct. 19, in Corpus Christi. Sister Consuelo, during her 70 years in religious life, served in orphanages in México, Laredo and the Residence for Girls in Corpus Christi. She was also a mistress of novices and postulants as well as evangelization ministry and pastoral work in Querétaro, México.
More than 500 youth from throughout the Diocese of Corpus Christi are anticipated at the annual High School Youth Spectacular slated for this Saturday, Oct. 21st, at the American Bank Center. The doors will open at 8 a.m. A highlight of the event will be a pilgrimage walk from the American Bank Center to Corpus Christi Cathedral, where Bishop Michael Mulvey will greet everyone as they walk through the Holy Doors of the Year of Mercy.
On Friday, Oct. 21, Sacred Heart School in Rockport honored "A+ Parents" who earned the distinction the end of the first quarter. All families are required to earn more than 25 volunteer hours each school year. These parents have already earned their 25 hours.

Sacred Heart School in Rockport held its annual Science Fair on Oct. 12–13 in the school library. The annual Science Fair is held to help students understand the scientific method and how scientists prove or disprove theories.
