Incarnate Word Academy strives to respect the worth of every person and for life in all its forms, which is why students, faculty, staff and the community donated blood on Thursday, Aug. 27, at the high school’s parking lot on Alameda. This past school year, IWA received an average of 30-40 donors for each visit.
Driscoll Children's Hospital is sponsoring a support group called "Lean on Me" for anyone who lost someone or knows of someone who lost someone close to them. This is a free service that begins next Thursday, Sept. 3 and runs for six weeks every Thursday.
The Offices of Vocations and Youth Ministry in the Diocese of Corpus Christi are sponsoring an essay contest open to all Catholic students in the diocese. There are categories for elementary, middle school and high school students.

I was waiting in an office yesterday and picked up the top magazine in the pile. It happened to be the Winter 2015 edition of the Baylor Magazine. Since the forensics department, specifically Dr. Lori Baker and her students, are strong collaborators with the South Texas Human Rights Center, I had a particular interest in combing its pages.
Shawn Carney will be the featured speaker at the 26th annual Celebration for Life dinner scheduled for Sept. 3, at 7 p.m. at Mansion Royal in Corpus Christi. Carney is the co-founder of "40 Days for Life," a nationally sought fundraiser, television personality and one of the youngest and most inspirational pro-life speakers in America.
Parents at Incarnate Word Academy had an opportunity to be a student again as the school invited them to attend their children’s classrooms this week. Beginning at the elementary level, on August 18, parents met at the school’s James R. Dougherty, Jr. Center for a quick meeting before visiting classrooms to attend teacher presentations. The school’s middle level hosted a Follow-the-Schedule Night on Wednesday, August 19, and the high school level is hosting a Follow-the-Schedule Night tonight, August 20, 2015 at 6:30 p.m.
On Aug. 25, Jesus Lerma’s dual credit Spanish class at St. John Paul II High School participated in a tour of the Del Mar College Foreign Language Lab and the Stone Writing Lab. One of the dual credit Spanish class requirements is to attend the Foreign Language Lab once a week, in addition to class attendance on our campus.
St. John Paul II High School senior Nicholas Kimmel was awarded the General Marc Cisneros Scholarship on Wednesday, Aug. 26. Kimmel was selected to receive this scholarship because he exemplifies the leadership and character traits of those represented by the General Cisneros.
Though Our Lady of Consolation is a small rural parish, it hosts several popular events throughout the year. The latest of these was its annual Catholic Youth Week, which took place July 13-16. The children were "in awe" as they entered the church hall, which Melissa Thomas and volunteers decorated to create the seashore with underwater scenes, fishnets, fish and shells.
Incarnate Word Academy’s Lady Angels defeated the Mathis Lady Pirates 3-0 in their first home match of the 2015 volleyball season on Aug. 18. The junior varsity team won 2-1. The Lady Angels will host St. John Paul II High School today, with the junior varsity game starting at 5 p.m. and the varsity game is at 6 p.m. at the Mother Patricia Gunning Gymnasium.
On Wednesday, Aug. 19, the Alice Deanery and the diocesan Youth Ministry office held a Back-to-School Night of Adoration at Our Lady of Guadalupe Parish in Alice. Present for the evening were students, youth ministers and parents from St. Joseph, St. Elizabeth and Our Lady of Guadalupe.
There is no greater honor presented by Del Mar College to its faculty than the Dr. Aileen Creighton Award for Teaching Excellence. During this year's fall convocation on Aug. 17, faculty and staff alike recognized Adelfino “Fino” Palacios, Jr. as the 2015 award recipient.
St. John Paul II High School senior leaders held a leadership retreat on Aug. 15-16 at the Blue Oak Ranch. The retreat is intended to inspire and inform the school's senior leaders to lead the students this school year from the football field to the classroom and into the community.

Student athletes at Incarnate Word Academy kicked off the school year with prayer at the school’s annual Athletic Prayer Breakfast on Aug. 15 at the school’s James R. Dougherty, Jr. Center. The event encourages athletes to maintain honorable sportsmanship and team unity.
St. Anthony Parish of Robstown completed the first Spanish A.C.T.S. retreat in the Diocese of Corpus Christi on Aug. 13-16 with pastor Father Tony Blount serving as spiritual director. Marcos Villarreal directed the retreat and was assisted by co-director Isaac Farias and Victor Quintanilla, Director of Spanish Outreach A.C.T.S. Missions San Antonio.
Bishop Michael Mulvey celebrated Mass for the Burse Club on Sunday, Aug. 9, at the Corpus Christi Cathedral. The Burse Club is run by the Diocesan Council of Catholic Women to assist to off set expenses of seminarians. Burse is a Medieval Latin word meaning "purse." It is also a term for a fund providing allowance for students, which the Church uses as a assist seminarians.
