Jesus Christ is the face of the Father’s mercy.” With these words Pope Francis opened his Bull of Indiction of the Extraordinary Jubilee of Mercy, which will begin on Dec. 8 on the Feast of the Immaculate Conception and the 50th anniversary of the close of the Second Vatican Council. The Holy Father is calling the faithful to be “merciful like the Father.”
The Commandments of God melt down to “loving God and loving neighbor.” That basic concept was well put into practice by the early Church in a very tangible way. The Acts of the Apostles tell us “All who believed were together and had all things in common (Acts 2:44).” They sold their property and possessions and shared them with all. “There was no needy person among them” because those who had plenty shared it with them (Acts 4:34).
Along both side aisles of the Cathedral, the walls are filled with beautiful stained glass windows. On the lower level there are nine windows, each depicting one of the saints who have some significance for the Cathedral, diocese, state or country. The upper or clerestory windows, tell the history of the Holy Eucharist as it is foreshadowed in the Old Testament, brought to fulfillment in the New Testament, brought to us today in the sacraments and adored by us in various devotions.
Incarnate Word Academy High School is one of 100 schools and non-profit community organizations in the U.S. selected to receive a $1,000 production grant to perform “Yes, Virginia, There is a Santa Claus.” The school's theatre arts department will perform the production on Wednesday, Dec. 2, in the Mother Patricia Gunning Gymnasium.

St. John Paul II High School Centurion Band participated in the Chuy's Children Giving to Children Parade in Austin on Saturday, Nov. 28. The parade started at the State Capitol and ended at Cesar Chavez. Santa's helpers collected toys from those who attended. The parade benefitted Operation Blue Santa, which will distribute toys to children.

Over 400 educators from the Diocese of Corpus Christi filled the Solomon Ortiz International Center on Nov. 13 for the Annual Diocesan Catholic Educators Conference. The conference entitled, "Called and Chosen: Being Jesus to Others" began with Mass celebrated by Bishop Michael Mulvey.
The 2nd Annual Vocation Retreat was held on Nov 6-8 at the Pax Christi Liturgical Retreat Center. Eighteen young men and women from parishes and universities in the Diocese of Corpus Christi attended the event.
Students, staff and family held a celebration in honor of Veterans at St. Anthony School on Nov. 11. The students invited the family members who have served in the United States Military and treated them to a performance of patriotic songs, poems and a parade in which they wore patriotic hats. Cheerleaders cheered and danced and students presented cards to the veterans as they sang, "God Bless the USA" and played Taps. After the program everyone enjoyed donuts.

The U.S. bishops Nov. 17 overwhelmingly approved priorities and strategic plans for the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops for 2017-2020 in a 233-4 vote.
In this moment of grief for the victims of continued extremist violence in the Middle East and Europe, the Catholic bishops of Texas pray for our leaders to show judicious discernment to find a means to help those genuine refugees who struggle to find shelter from the violence of their homelands. We must not forget that we are a nation of immigrants.
