Bishop Michael Mulvey hired Misty Smith as the new Chief Financial Officer for the Diocese of Corpus Christi effective Feb. 1.
About one year ago, before coming to work for the diocese as Controller, Misty had a couple of other job offers. Still, she felt a strong pull to work for the Church.
“It kind of caught me off guard,” she said. But after speaking with her husband and her mom and praying about it with her family, they all started getting the same compulsion that this was where she needed to be. “And I remember telling my mom about it, and she said, ‘Why are you even questioning it at this point? If God is telling you this is where you need to be, then by all means, that’s where you need to be.’ It was a great story.”
She was born and raised in Flour Bluff to Calvin and Margaret Fancher. She attended Flour Bluff ISD and graduated from Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi with a bachelor’s and master’s degree in accounting. Misty and her husband, Jason have a 10-year-old daughter, Cadence, and her mother, Margaret, lives near to provide grandmom duty. They all live in Calallen and go to St. Peter, Prince of the Apostle Parish in Corpus Christi.
“I love the nonprofit world, you know, and having a chance to work with the Church has been amazing. Working for the diocese is a different culture. This very positive, loving, beautiful culture doesn’t exist anywhere else, in my opinion, or at least not in my career so far,” Smith said. “So, I feel extremely blessed to find a way to use my gifts and serve God in the Church simultaneously.”
She loves jigsaw puzzles, and she and her daughter enjoy scrapbooking and making greeting cards, bracelets, and jewelry.
“I love working in finance because money has a huge impact on people. It is very closely tied to emotion,” she said. “So having that personal relationship to go along with working in finance is critical.”
