Candidates Carlos De La Rosa and Charles Andrew Silvas were ordained priests by Bishop Michael Mulvey in the Corpus Christi Cathedral on June 18. During the Liturgy, Bishop Michael Mulvey laid his hands on their heads. He then took holy oil and anointed their hands – hands that would soon hold the Lord in the consecration.
Corpus Christi Cathedral was filled with thanksgiving as the faithful of the diocese came out to witness the joyful ceremony, transforming these men into servants of God. They were joined by families, friends, fellow seminarians, formators, sisters and other priests.
In his homily, Bishop Mulvey advised Deacons De La Rosa and Silvas to keep up to date with Church teaching, “It comes from the Holy Spirit.”
“I believe we cannot understand the priesthood without understanding the Church. The Church, the Body of Christ —what is it? The Church, while ever remaining the Body of Christ, matures over time and responds to the needs of people today. The needs of the people today are different than they were in the 16th century, and the Church travels with people in time, in our own time, through the teaching of the Second Vatican Council and successive teachings.”
“The Holy Spirit guides the Church to understand her identity as communion and unity. The Church is communion in the image of the Holy Trinity as God is one, though three there is a communion of love. The Church is the living presence of that communion in God. This communion is our identity, and it is our mission.”
He also advised them to be humble enough to ask forgiveness and never neglect prayer, not just the prayers of the Church, but grow a personal relationship with Jesus Christ, with God, the Father, the Holy Spirit, and His Blessed Mother.
“Do your part in continuing to study. It is something that will enrich you. St. Paul XI spoke of the acceptable teacher, and that is the person who witnesses before they teach because if they don’t witness, their teaching is flawed.”
After the homily, each man knelt before the bishop and promised to obey him and his successors.
This was followed by the litany of supplication and ordination by the ancient rite of laying on of hands by the bishop. They were vested with their stoles and chasubles by their brother priests, and all the priests gave them a brotherly hug.
The newly ordained priests will serve as parochial vicars in Corpus Christi. Father De La Rosa will serve at St. Pius X Parish and Father Silvas will serve at Ss. Cyril & Methodius Parish.
