CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – Five Incarnate Word Academy High School Level students participated in the Texas Art Education Association’s Visual Art Scholastic Event (VASE) in Bryan, Texas on April 5-6, 2013.
IWA juniors Erin Kuffel and Sam Lathrop received superior ratings and medals. Erin placed in photography and Sam placed in self-portrait.
“It’s a new experience,” Erin Kuffel said. “I’m pretty excited about it.”
Sophomore Lois Pierce, junior Lucero Perez, and senior Deanna Ramirez received excellent ratings.
“Texas is the only state that holds a state-wide art competition for high school students,” IWA art teacher Kathy Towers said. “So it’s really exciting.”
While at the competition, students participated in professional workshops, lectures, demonstrations, and outdoor sketching opportunities.
IWA students had the opportunity to visit the Blanton Museum and the Harry Ransom Center on Friday in Austin. They also saw one of four Gutenberg Bibles. On Saturday, students took art workshops and viewed the 1,500 pieces of state-competing student art.
