Two days of service – baking, landscaping, visiting people in a nursing home and bringing flowers to a cemetery – and all that on a free weekend? Fifty-eight teens from Mathis, Corpus Christi, Robstown and Beeville participated in the first Let’s Brighten Our Community Camp. Motivated by the Love of Jesus that we find in the Gospels, they learned about conversions that happen in prison, made placemats and cookies for inmates, listened to the life stories and wisdom of the elderly, shared donuts with the parishioners at Sacred Heart Church in Mathis and cleaned up two cemeteries in Mathis.
It was a beautiful, grace-filled time. Many of the teens shared at the end how they felt compelled to go “out of their comfort zone” to take the initiative in loving. An hour of adoration followed – a profound moment, with a long line of teens who went to confession.
The evening at Camp Zephyr brought them an experience of deep friendship in Jesus while playing and praying around the bonfire. And they discovered they can connect with one another and with God – without their phones. Mark your calendars - the next Let’s Brighten Our Community Retreat will be on February 15!
