Catholic educators from throughout the Diocese of Corpus Christi gathered at St. John Paul II High School on Friday, November 17, for a professional development day. Starting with a Mass with Bishop Michael Mulvey, they had two sessions with National Speaker Greg Wolcott, culminating in an awards ceremony honoring educators for their dedication and service.
Sixty-three teachers were recognized for their years of service, from five years up to 50 years of their lives focused on Catholic education with the Diocese of Corpus Christi. Dozens of other educators were recognized for Catechist certification and recertification, which is needed if educators teach theology or religion courses.
“There’s such beauty in our teachers’ dedication and ministry for Catholic education. We see long-term service, the love they show for their students, colleagues, and one another,” said Dr. Rosemary Henry, superintendent of Catholic Schools at the Diocese of Corpus Christi. “It’s important to celebrate their successes and the impact they make every day through their service to Catholic education.”
Two educators from the Diocese of Corpus Christi were nominated for Teacher of the Year with the Texas Catholic Conference of Bishops: Benjamin Nye of St. John Paul II High School and Gracie Cantu of Sacred Heart School in Rockport. They will both advance to the state level, competing with educators from Catholic schools throughout the entire state.
Sr. Elizabeth Close, OVISS, was honored for 50 years of service to Catholic education. At 15, Sr. Elizabeth arrived at the Incarnate Word Convent in Corpus Christi from Dublin, Ireland. A sophomore in high school at the time, she finished her education at Incarnate Word Academy.
“When I walked up to receive my award, I was overcome with joy,” marveled Sr. Elizabeth, who teaches Montessori Primary at Incarnate Word Academy.
“I didn’t do it alone; I made it here alongside many, many wonderful colleagues all the way through. I hardly felt 50 years go by – it goes by fast! I’m just so thankful to God and the community, including all I have been on this journey with through the years.”
