Students from Sherri Davis' Health class at St. John Paul II High School cooked, danced and rapped their way through the week long "Cooking Show," from Sept. 23-30.
Eighteen cooking shows consisted of teams of students, who were challenged to create an entire meal, including dessert, under 1,000 calories. The teams chose a theme for their presentations. Some students chose Chinese, Hawaiian, Mexican and Italian foods, while others used fruit or holiday sweets as the theme. The main entree was a joint effort prepared by all members of the team.
On Sept. 30 at the 9:15 a.m. class, chefs Corina Cuya, Eugenio Garcia Jr., Natalia Lopez and Johnathan Ruiz each presented Mexican dishes which included the appetizer–
pico de gallo,
tostadas, Mexican lettuce wraps,
enchiladas suizas and basil leaf yogurt pops for dessert. Mexican flags and a banner of colored-cutouts with mini
sombreros donned their presentation of foods. After the students explained their dishes, Ruiz danced the
salsa to the tune of Latino music playing in the background.
Each dish was presented to judges and classmates with recipes and calories. Judges graded each student on content, taste and presentation.
