A National Eagle Court of Honor was held Feb. 16, at St. Patrick's Catholic Church Parish Hall recognizing Gilberto Sosa III, Michael Salloum, Andres Castillo and Robinson McMillan who attained Boy Scouts’ highest rank of Eagle Scout.
St. Patrick's Church, Knights of Columbus Council #1202 and Troop 162 hosted the ceremony. Troop 162 was charted in 1949 and is now in their 64th year of continuous service to the youth of south Texas and the community of Corpus Christi. These young men are now one of the 121 Eagle Scouts that have come from Troop 162.
Sosa is the son of Dr. Gilberto Sosa Jr. and Gilda Sosa. His Eagle Scout Service project was for the Ronald McDonald House of Corpus Christi. Sosa demolishing an old dilapidated walkway and built a large elevated wooden deck. The deck is 23'3" long and 17' wide. It extends from the backyard doorway to the outdoor recreation area and connects two existing gazebos and also has a ramp for the handicapped.
Salloum is the son of Dr. Emile Salloum and Dr. Cynthia Salloum. His Eagle Scout service project was also for the Ronald McDonald Donald House of Corpus Christi. He designed and built an 8' x 24' vegetable garden for the house that included tomatoes, various types of peppers and beans, to give the families easy access to fresh ingredients during their stay while their children are treated in nearby Corpus Christi hospitals.
Castillo is the son of Joe and Patricia Castillo. His service project was for Family Outreach of Corpus Christi. He designed, constructed and painted eight youth sized chairs for their play therapy room where they conduct counseling sessions with children. The project also required the building of four carnival themed games for their festivity day celebrations held throughout the year.
McMillan is the son of Frank and Sheryl McMillan. His Eagle project was for the Woodlawn Elementary School in the Corpus Christi Independent School District. He built a set of four wooden benches in front of the school. The benches provide safe, comfortable places for students and parents to sit as they wait for transportation before and after school. His team also landscaped the front of the school and refurbished and repainted the flagpole.
