Bishop Michael Mulvey broke ground with the sisters of the Society of Our Lady of the Most Holy Trinity (SOLT) at the site of their first Motherhouse on Dec. 2.
Before breaking ground, Sister Megan Mary Thibodeau, General Sister Servant of the SOLT community of sisters, gave a warm welcome and thanked all in attendance and those who helped make their dream possible. Bishop Mulvey prayed and blessed the site of their new motherhouse, which is located south of St. Anthony Church at 3600 County Road 61 in Violet.
“The motherhouse will be at the heart of the greater SOLT family as well as in the heart of our home diocese,” Sister Megan Mary said. “Our goal for building a motherhouse isn’t just about a building. It’s about much, much more. It’s about building our future and preserving our roots as a community.”
“We’re deeply grateful, Bishop Mulvey, for your presence here today and for your leadership and support and encouragement through the years. Thank you so much for coming,” she said.
She also thanked supporters and board members: Terry and Peggy Dunn; Father Peter Marsalek, the SOLT General Priest Servant; Francette Meaney; Paul and Daphne Laudadio; Sylvia Romero, Tim and Cyndy Legamaro, Tom Carlisle, Mike Lippincott, Mark Luddeke, and many others.
The motherhouse will be built on 5.5 acres of land they already own and where SOLT lay women currently live. The 21,000 sq. ft. residence will house 20 rooms, ten of which will be ADA compliant. In addition, the residence will have a chapel and sacristy, a kitchen and dining room, a common room, a nursing station, a library, and staff offices.
The SOLT international headquarters have been based in Corpus Christi since 1994, and SOLT sisters, brothers and priests have served in parishes and schools throughout the diocese and in missions worldwide. An investment in their future will be an investment in the local community for many years.
Before the blessing, Bishop Mulvey applauded the SOLT sister’s newest initiative “to care for those who have served so beautifully throughout the years —to be able to house them and give them a beautiful place to live and pray and be a community together,” he said.
