Sister Mary Margaret lived life of service

She is remembered as a tall, postulant-clad girl with an air of efficiency. She still had a military gait and a gift of adaptability, ready service and leadership. Adoration was her first love.

During the middle of her life she became ill with the first signs of cancer, which eventually took her life. Amazingly a doctor who operated on Sister Mary Margaret did something unique in cancer surgery, which resulted in her unexpected recovery or at least a very long recession.

Through many years she served in leadership roles as superior in various American houses of the order, including the Blessed Sacrament Convent in Corpus Christi.

One of her religious sisters, who was always amazed at her indefatigable service of others, once asked Sister Mary Margaret what was her “secret” behind it all.

Sister Mary Margaret explained with glowing gratitude how God gave her a new life, had rescued her from certain death–from being utterly helpless¬¬–to do anything for others; a condition of complete uselessness to the community. This gratitude in her heart was the “secret” that drove her to service. And serve she did.

One sister recalled that living with Sister Mary Margaret reminded her of the Scriptural text that automatically came to her mind, which Sister Mary Margaret might well have used as her life-long mantra, “The Son of Man came, not to be served, but to serve.”

Sister Mary Margaret’s life was one of service, like Him.
