Sportscaster Arnold Gomez, known as the "voice of the Sinton Pirates," found his voice more than 40 years ago as lector at Our Lady of Guadalupe Church in Sinton where he honed his talent before parishioners at the 10 a.m. Mass.
Gomez was honored before the Sinton game on Oct. 23 with a plaque proclaiming him “the voice of the Sinton Pirates.” He began announcing Sinton games in 1986 and has been doing it ever since.
Father Domingo De Llano was pastor and pharmacist Arnold Acuna was the head lector at Our Lady of Guadalupe in 1974. "Mr. Acuna asked me to start slowly with the second readings only at 10 a.m. Mass. After a few months I was the permanent lector for that Mass and doing all the readings. I also narrated the annual passion play during Holy Week," Gomez said.
He continued to lector until 1998, but then moved to Austin. He came back on Fridays for the Pirates' home football games. In 2006, he moved to Portland and is currently attending Our Lady Star of the Sea in Corpus Christi.
