Catholic scouts go camping, learn life skills, develop leadership, and try to help people as best they can. However, all of this is grounded in their Catholic faith, which they try to deepen by learning about the rosary, the American saints and many other foundations of our Catholic faith.
On Sunday afternoon, the Catholic Committee on Scouting honored the scouts who studied different aspects of the faith well. Bishop Michael Mulvey presided over the celebration and reminded them that Pope Francis told scouts in an audience to “spread light” in the world. Referring to Sunday’s Gospel, where the scribes and the Pharisees thought that Jesus was crazy and even had the devil in him because they were jealous of the attention that he got, he told them that jealousy is the root of conflict and war. Instead, we are called to be brothers and sisters in Christ, as Jesus said, “For whoever does the will of my Father in heaven is my brother and sister and mother” (Mt 12:50). He congratulated the awardees for excelling in trying to learn more about God and how to be good citizens of this country.
Thirty scouts received awards from the hands of the bishop this year: four Daisy Girl Scouts received the “God is Love Award” – Olivia Rose Banuelos, Kylie Behn, Phoebe Ruiz and Gabriella Ann Gomez.
The Family of God Award was given to Brownie Girl Scouts Penelope Beish, Sophia Nicole Pineda and Ainsley Bennett Erickson. Cub Scouts received the Light of Christ Award – Layla Muse, Hannah Raffay, Arturo Renteria, Rylan Pina, Westyn Allen, Wyatt Allen, Jonah Luis Garza, Carlos Ignacio Guzman Jr. and John Michael Gomez – and the Parvuli Dei Award, Felicity Rocha, Aryc Arriaga and Daniel De la Paz.
Eleven scouts got the Ad Altare Dei Award: Allysandra Capetillo, Brance Dominguez, Ian White, Jax Rocha, Dominic Rocha, Gilberto “Tony” Rodriguez, Rowan Ashby, Joshua Rodriguez, Sabas “TJ” Perez IV, Carlos Morals and John Marroquin III.
Four adult leaders were also recognized for their service and dedication to scouting: Andrea Bell, Communication Chair of the Catholic Committee on Scouting, received the Elizabeth Ann Seton Award; Melinda and Jaime Rocha received the Bronze Pelican Award; and Jesus Garza Jr., chairman of the committee, received the highest recognition—the Saint George Award.
