Second through fifth grade students from Sacred Heart School in Rockport competed against each other in 10 rounds of a Spelling Bee on Jan. 31. The last word was “wrestle,” and the Spelling Bee winners were Taylor Soto in the fifth grade, who received 1st place and Penny Lynch in the second grade who received 2nd place.
As parents and family members of students from Sacred Heart School in Rockport began to trickle into the gym, the second through fifth grades were a buzz with excitement and anticipation.
They were to compete against each other at a Spelling Bee on Jan. 31 in celebration of National Catholic Schools Week.
Their pastor Father Ray Yrlas began the event with a prayer and read a proclamation naming the week of Jan. 29–Feb. 4, 2023, National Catholic Schools Week (NCSW), signed by the mayor of Rockport, Timothy Jayroe. He also stressed the importance of trying to remain calm during the competition.
The students received instructions and encouragement from school Principal Kathy Barnes, and the rounds began. Mrs. Barnes read each word aloud, and students were allowed to ask to hear the word again, define it or use it in a sentence.

Sacred Heart School began its NCSW with a school Mass held at Sacred Heart Church on Jan. 29. In addition to a Spelling Bee; they had a Religion Bowl. They will also visit grandparents and display their talents this Friday at a talent show.
