Deacon Victor Joe Benys Jr., 85, passed away peacefully on September 21, 2023. He joins his beloved wife of more than 60 years, Magdalen “Maggie” Benys, who passed away three weeks prior and has been saving his spot in heaven.
Vic, the oldest of four siblings, grew up on his family’s ranch in Corpus Christi, working cattle with his father and brothers. When he enlisted in the U.S. Marines, his commanders quickly spotted his talent with horses and put him in charge of running the cavalry stables. His military service took him to Okinawa, Japan.
When he returned home, he turned his attention to engineering. He had a brilliant mind for problem-solving and building and was a self-taught special project engineer for Coastal Refinery in Corpus Christi for over 30 years.
As a deacon for Our Lady of Perpetual Help, Deacon Vic touched the lives of hundreds of families in the community. He took immense pride and joy in being a deacon and was a beloved leader in the church. He was passionate about sharing his faith with others and studying it — he knew the Catechism and Bible backward and forward. He and Maggie led the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults, among many other contributions. Deacon Vic is survived by his five children and their families.
A gathering will begin at 11:30 am with a Rosary beginning at 12:30 pm, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial on Saturday, October 7, 2023, at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church. A committal service will begin at 2:30 pm at Seaside Memorial Park, followed by a reception back at the church.
