On Jan. 28, thousands of Texans gathered at 15th and Colorado Streets in Austin and marched to the state Capitol in defense of life. The 2012 Texas Rally for Life was held on the 39th anniversary of the Roe v. Wade Supreme Court decision in 1973, which made abortion legal throughout all nine months of pregnancy.
DPS estimated Saturday’s crowd at 5,000, a significant jump from the estimated 2,000–3,000 last year.
Bishop Wm. Michael Mulvey of Corpus Christi, who concelebrated the Mass at San Jose Church, with Austin Bishop Joe Vasquez, said a larger venue would be needed next year as it will be the 40th anniversary and organizers expect to take more people next year.
“This year we took six buses with a total of 293 people to Austin to attend the March,” said Deacon Stephen Nolte, head of the Diocese of Corpus Christi Office of Life, Justice and Human Dignity. “We hope to double that number next year even as we develop a local component to the March.”
Of the 293 in attendance at the March from Corpus Christi, most were from schools and youth groups, including from Blessed John Paul II High School, Bishop Garriga Middle School, Incarnate Word Academy, Our Lady of Good Counsel and Nuestra Señora de San Juan de los Lagos, Madre de la Iglesia.
