Forty high school graduates from Incarnate Word Academy received their diplomas during a commencement ceremony on Saturday, May 25, preceded by Mass at Corpus Christi Cathedral.
Bishop Michael Mulvey celebrated the Mass and, during a heartfelt homily, congratulated the graduates on successfully completing their education at Incarnate Word Academy. He also called on the graduates to always remember the countless sacrifices their parents made throughout their years of education.
Citing the famous poem by John Donne, “No Man is an Island,” Bishop Mulvey reminded the graduates they are never alone.
“No person is an island; no one can walk throughout life alone, without help, without guidance, and the support and love of others,” he said. “And hopefully, it has also been a time of prayer for you, asking the Lord and the Holy Spirit to guide you with the knowledge and wisdom you need. Each one of you has put forth personal effort to be deemed worthy of the diploma you will receive, and congratulations to each one of you.”
He also encouraged the graduates to remember every person who has walked with them throughout the years leading to this day.
“Today is also a day you can give gratitude to those who have given you their assistance, encouragement, expertise, and prayers, especially your family, administration, faculty and parish communities,” he said.
Each of the 40 graduates from Incarnate Word Academy will proceed to university or colleges, both locally and as far away as Indiana and California. Valedictorian Annabelle Clark and Salutatorian Luna Salazar motivated their fellow graduates through inspiring remarks. Also, they paid homage to the Sisters of the Incarnate Word and Blessed Sacrament, who founded Incarnate Word Academy 150 years ago.
