This week all 12 Catholic schools in the Diocese of Corpus Christi have joined other Catholic schools across the nation in celebration of National Catholic Schools Week.
Many schools began the week by celebrating Mass with their parishes on Sunday, Jan. 30.
This year the celebration includes the theme "Catholic Schools: Faith. Excellence. Service."
Schools will observe the annual celebration week with Mass, open houses and other activities for students, families, parishioners and community members. Through these events, schools focus on the value Catholic education provides to young people and its contributions to our Church, communities, and nation.
Since 1974, National Catholic Schools Week has been the annual celebration of Catholic education in the United States. It starts the last Sunday in January and runs all week. This year it will end on Feb. 5.
Below is the prayer for the Diocese of Corpus Christi, entitled “Let Them Shine So Others May Know And Love Him,” written by Dr. Rosemary J. Henry, Superintendent of Catholic Schools:
Loving Lord,
During this celebration of National Catholic Schools Week,
let your light shine upon our Catholic schools.
Let your grace rain down, bringing love and hope to each person we encounter.
Grant wisdom to our staff, teachers, leaders and Pastors and the blessings of strength and joy to serve and form our youth.
May our classrooms be filled with learning encouragement and the gift of your Holy Spirit.
Inspire the children to share their faith with all those they meet.
May Catholic education grow so that children around the world may experience the Good News.
Guide our students to become Beacons of Hope, Architects for Peace and Ambassadors for Christ.
Lead the way for our Catholic schools to become a source of hope for the young and for our Church and to become a blessing to families with their greatest gifts - their sons and daughters.
Let their light shine before others and bring glory and honor to you, loving Lord.
Amen.
St. Thomas Aquinas, patron saint of Catholic schools, pray for us.
