Sacred Heart School in Rockport offers a special reward for students who choose to read selected books and take Accelerated Reading tests to earn points. Before Christmas break and at the end of the school year, volunteers and staff set up an “AR Store.” The store is filled with trinkets, toys, jewelry, books, and a multitude of miscellaneous donated items that are priced from 1 to 100 points. The Sacred Heart School community has been generous in providing a unique assortment of choices for the children. It is also possible for a student to buy a pizza party for their class or to sit in the “Principal’s Chair” for a day.
The students can come to the store to “spend” their points two times a year. Some students know right away what they want to spend their points on. Others look long and hard before making their decisions.
This May, some students chose to give their points toward buying small, frozen pizzas to donate to the St. Vincent de Paul Society for the food bags that are distributed to the applicants. Each 100 points counted as $10. 288 points were donated, so 28 pizzas went to St. Vincent de Paul. The community of Sacred Heart School is very proud of the students and their efforts to become strong readers and well-equipped students.
