The Lady Angels’ varsity volleyball team earned first place in the Cuero Lady Gobbler Tournament on Aug. 27. IWA sophomores Caroline Pekar and McKynna Beck were named to the All-Tournament Team. In addition, the IWA junior varsity team defeated West Oso High School twice with final scores of 2-0 for both games.
“We are doing great with the adversity that we have been handed,” IWA Head Volleyball Coach Ashley Pettus said.
At the beginning of the season, the Lady Angels were down two players. Junior Madeline Peetz was out with a hip injury she received over the summer and senior Hayley Guerra sustained an injury after the team’s first scrimmage. Madeline has returned to the court, but the team is still missing Hayley while she recovers from her injury.
“We have been playing the past couple of weeks with only seven players and the girls have handled that work load really well,” Pettus said. “I’m very proud of them.”
Pettus also said fans need to be on the lookout for the team’s upperclassmen: senior Catherine Schultz and junior Madeline Peetz.
“Catherine always does a great job on and off the court. She’s definitely vocal and expects a lot of herself and her teammates,” Pettus said. “Madeline will be another nice addition in this department. She’s a go-getter and takes initiative in a lot of ways.”
However, Catherine and Madeline are not the only leaders this season. Pettus said one of the team’s underclassmen is also showing great leadership skills.
“Caroline Pekar also does a great job being the action-leader,” Pettus said. “She provides experience that is calming in pressure situations and doesn’t mind taking on the point-crucial tasks.”
During the 2015-2016 volleyball season, the Lady Angels’ varsity team ended their season 20-15 overall and 10-6 in district. The Lady Angels’ junior varsity team ended their season 15-6 overall and 10-5 in district.
