Incarnate Word Academy’s Lady Angels defeated the Mathis Lady Pirates 3-0 in their first home match of the 2015 volleyball season on Aug. 18. The junior varsity team won 2-1. The Lady Angels will host St. John Paul II High School today, with the junior varsity game starting at 5 p.m. and the varsity game is at 6 p.m. at the Mother Patricia Gunning Gymnasium.
“With the experience that we had this previous year, along with the addition of some new talents, I feel that we will have a great season,” IWA Head Volleyball Coach Ashley Pettus said.
Last season, Haven Cruz and Kate Pekar were named to the TAPPS All-District Second Team and Leslie Fagan and Catherine Schultz were named TAPPS All-District Honorable Mention Team. In addition, Pekar was named to the TAPPS All-State Academic Team.
Coach Pettus said Cruz, a senior setter on the varsity team, has stepped up vocally through the start of the season. “You can see a desire that is contagious and I think the other girls are picking it up,” Pettus said.
Pekar, a senior outside hitter on the varsity team, is returning to the team after tearing her ACL last season.
“She has worked extremely hard rehabbing her injury to return to the court,” Pettus said. “She will join our other returning volleyball players to help the younger teammates step up and be prepared to lead the future of Lady Angel volleyball.”
