On Saturday, May 26, 2023, the 52 seniors of John Paul II Catholic High School were assembled in the front rows of Corpus Christi Cathedral in full graduation regalia. The church was packed to the hilt with supportive family members and friends, all excited to witness the final moments of the students’ high school careers. Bishop Michael Mulvey presided over the mass alongside his predecessor Bishop Carmody, and his sermon, directed at the graduates, focused on reminding them of St. Pope John Paul II’s famous phrase, “Be not afraid.” He told the young people to have hope in the future, not to get caught up in the sentimentality of the past, and to learn how to love through Christ. He said that loving as Christ loves will help them be humble, overcome personal limitations and difficulties they will face in life, and work together to build a loving community wherever they go. “You are educated for a purpose, not for yourself: to bring the message of God to others. Bring God’s beauty into the relationships with others.”
Afterward, Salutatorian Andrew Ybarra gave a short speech, thanking staff and family for their support. “We’ve been through a lot together,” he told his classmates. “Our time together was special and memorable. Be proud of the people you have become, and be hopeful for the future.”
He was followed by Valedictorian Elizabeth Arnolds, who thanked her parents for prioritizing her education, and her older sister for giving her an excellent example to follow. She felt her family’s sacrifices for her education and formation had paid off. To her classmates, she said, “Thank you for being kind and supportive. I’m rooting for your success. I’ve seen you evolve, and I’ve seen your talents. There’s a place where you will be accepted for your talent and individuality.” The students felt that the caring and compassionate staff of John Paul II had prepared them well for the following chapters of their lives.
