Hundreds of faithful filled the pews at Corpus Christi Cathedral for midnight Mass last Sunday, as Bishop Michael Mulvey concelebrated alongside Rector Father James Stembler and Master of Ceremonies Father Pete Elizardo.
The Mass began with a procession to the nativity scene on the side altar, where a young altar server lovingly placed the figurine of Baby Jesus into its manger and the procession proceeded to the main altar.
Bishop Mulvey began his homily by informing worshippers there would be no mass at the site where Jesus was born in Bethlehem this year.
“Mass has been halted this year due to the war and in solidarity with Christians in the West Bank and Gaza. It’s a sad story, especially on a Christmas Day when we would like to rejoice, but it’s also the reality of our world, that we cannot gather peacefully at the place where Jesus was born; where God became man, Jesus Christ,” said Bishop Mulvey.
Mulvey reminded parishioners and visitors that the Word of God and the sacraments sustains us.
“When we do not listen to the Word, we find ourselves in chaos, as we see in our world today. Jesus summed up all the laws of the prophets in the simple, double command to love God with your whole heart, mind, soul, and strength and your neighbor as yourself,” he said. “If we do this, families would change, society would change, our world would change and they would be having Mass at the Nativity of Jesus tonight.”
After Mass, Bishop Mulvey greeted the faithful outside the Cathedral, while some families stayed inside to snap a photo in front of the Nativity scene.
