CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – After placing first in the Junior Individual Historical Paper category at the Texas History Day Contest, Sheridan Steen is competing in the Kenneth E. Behring National History Day Contest at the University of Maryland in College Park, Maryland from June 9-13.
Students from across the United States, American Samoa, Guam, International Schools and Department of Defense Schools in Europe are competing in the National History Day Contest, according to the contest’s website.
This has been a long and rewarding process for Sheridan — beginning with the competition at the IWA Middle Level’s History Fair in January, where she placed third in the historical paper category in the seventh and eighth grade division. She moved on to the Coastal Bend History Fair in March, where she placed first in the Junior Individual Historical Paper category. Then in May, Sheridan competed in the State History Day Contest in Austin. She placed first with her topic of “The Annexation of Hawaii” in the Junior Individual Historical Paper category.
Incarnate Word Academy (IWA) Middle Level students have participated in a year-long academic program focused on historical research. Eight IWA students competed in the State History Day Contest. Sheridan, Justin Cavazos, Paris Hanna, Jackie Rodriguez, Danielle Harrel, Helena Van Maren, Caitlyn Martinez and Julio “J.R.” Ramos competed in categories such as historical paper, group exhibit and individual documentary.
“I am beyond proud that all of the students’ hard work has paid off,” IWA History Teacher Trisha Osborne-Kay said.
