Incarnate Word Academy sophomore Robert Anaya received a silver medal in the 100-yard freestyle (47.52) and a bronze medal in the 100-yard backstroke (53.67) on Feb. 13 at the TAPPS State Swim Championships. The state meet was held at the Josh Davis Natatorium in San Antonio.
Several students from the swim team also competed at the state event. Overall, the boys finished in 8th place and the girls finished in 16th place.
BOYS
The boys’ 200-medley relay team, which consists of Robert Anaya, Elijah Wolfe, Connor Hall, and Leo Lugo, earned 6th place (1:52:47).
“The boys’ relay time was the fastest of the year and the second fastest in school history,” Coach Mic Nelson said. “It was just 0.90 seconds off the school record.”
Robert also bettered his old mark as the leadoff leg — setting a new school record for the 50 backstroke with a time of 25.40.
J.R. Ramos slashed almost 2 seconds off his time in the 100 breast. He finished in 11th place (1:17.53).
Elijah Wolfe took 14th place (25.32) in the 50 free and Connor Hall earned 14th place (1:11.25) in the 100 butterfly.
Steven Wendel swam the only distance event the high school has to offer, the 500 free (6:16.34).
“Steven leaves IWA as a senior this year swimming his best 500 free ever,” Coach Nelson said.
Leo Lugo, Kaleb Pena, Steven Wendel, and Elijah Wolfe dropped almost three full seconds in the 200 free relay (1:46.96) from their time in comparison to the TAPPS Regional Swim Meet.
Robert Anaya, Leo Lugo, David Villarreal, and Elijah Wolfe narrowly missed the 3rd position on the medal stand.
“Their time of 3:43.47 puts them in the record book with the second fastest time in school history,” Coach Nelson said.
GIRLS
For the girls’ 200 medley relay team, Jessica Bang, Mika Rendon, Angelina Wolfe, and Carolina Munoz finished in 12th place (2:21.78).
“Their time was two and a half seconds faster than their region mark,” Coach Nelson said.
Angelina Wolfe took 5th place (26.11) in the 50 free, breaking her old school record and creating a new school record.
Jessica Bang finished in 16th place (3:22.85) in the 200 individual medley.
Angelina Wolfe took 7th place and Mikaela Rendon finished in 15th place in the 100 breast.
“Mikaela had her fastest time of the year,” Coach Nelson said.
Angelina Wolfe, Mikaela Rendon, Angelica Reyes, and Carolina Munoz earned 10th place (4:48.85) in the 400 free relay.
At the end of the school year, the Angels will lose six seniors — four boys and two girls.
“With the power of our young team and those moving up from the middle level next year, the future of IWA swimming looks very bright,” Coach Nelson said.
