The Incarnate Word Academy varsity swim teams qualify to compete in the TAPPS State Swim Championships on Feb. 13 after a successful meet at regionals on Jan. 28.
The state meet will be held at the Josh Davis Natatorium in San Antonio, Texas with the races to start at 3:30 p.m.
“The swim teams have had a great year,” Coach Myra Nelson said. “The girls have made huge time drops in their events and their stroke technique has greatly improved. The boys have had the same improvement this season.”
At regionals, several students qualified to compete at state after placing in individual and relay events.
In the boys competition Sophomore Robert Anaya is the Angel’s top seed swimmer. He placed first in the men’s 100-yard freestyle (48.51) and third in the men’s 100 yard backstroke (56.42).
Freshman Elijah Wolfe placed sixth in the 50 yard freestyle (25.70); senior Connor Hall placed fifth in the 100 yard butterfly (1:12.12); sophomore Leo Lugo placed fifth in the 500 yard freestyle (6:11.87); and sophomore J.R. Ramos placed sixth in the 100 yard breaststroke (1:19.51).
The 400 yard freestyle relay team consisting of Robert Anaya, Elijah Wolfe, Leo Lugo, and sophomore David Villarreal, placed second (3:55.14).
The 200 yard freestyle relay team, consisting of Leo Lugo, Elijah Wolfe, and seniors Kaleb Pena and Steven Wendel, placed fourth (1:49.60).
In the girls competition Senior Angelina Wolfe is the Lady Angel’s top seeded girl. She placed second in the women’s 50 yard freestyle (26:41) and third in the 100 yard breaststroke (1:17.05).
Sophomore Jessica Bang placed eighth in the women’s 200 yard individual relay (3:18.21).
The 400 yard freestyle relay team, consisting of Angelina Wolfe, Jessica Bang, freshman Carolina Munoz, and sophomore Mikaela Rendon, placed fifth (4:52.33).
