50 students graduated on Friday afternoon from Incarnate Word Academy High School. Bishop Michael Mulvey celebrated the graduation mass in the cathedral. He reminded the students that they were entering a new phase of life and education “because education will never end.” But until now, parents and teachers were responsible for them, “now it is up to you to make decisions.”
The unknown that awaits them could be a source of anxiety, Bishop Mulvey continued, but fear has a place in everyone’s life: “It leads us to humility, to understand who I am as a person.” And no one should ever be too proud to ask for help.
The object of education, so the bishop, is “to teach us to love beauty,” a beauty that goes beyond physical appearance. “Beauty is relationship because God is relationship – the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit.” Whenever there is discord, there is no beauty; therefore, the students should strive to live in harmony and unity: “Let’s not only dream, let’s make unity possible,” he recommended to the graduates.
After the mass, Principal Jose Torres welcomed everyone and presented the two co-Valedictorians David Matl and Nikolai Steen. Each student received their diploma from Bishop Mulvey, before they could move their tassels from right to left – and celebrate.
