CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – Five Incarnate Word Academy High School Level art students are going to state this weekend to compete in the Texas Art Education Association’s Visual Art Scholastic Event (VASE) in Bryan, Texas.
IWA students Sam Lathrop, Lois Pierce, Deanna Ramirez, Lucero Perez, and Erin Kuffel placed in the Region 2 VASE competition on February 23 which was held at Del Mar College. Their pieces selected to compete at state were in drawing, photography and sculpture.
“We have never had this many students go state for VASE,” IWA art teacher Kathy Towers said.
After placing at the Region 2 competition, the students’ pieces were sent to be judged at state level by a panel selected by the Texas Art Education Association’s Executive Board. Students will learn their state results at the State VASE competition.
“It’s a new experience,” Erin Kuffel said. “I’m pretty excited about it.”
While the students’ artworks are being judged, the students will participate in professional workshops, lectures, demonstrations and outdoor sketching opportunities. According to the VASE website, the event is intended to provide a forum for art teachers and students to meet and to grow artistically and personally.
