Fasting. What comes to mind when you hear or think of fasting? Fasting goes far beyond giving up something like a candy bar.
In the first video of his Lenten video retreat titled ‘Growing in Grace: Lenten Reflections With Bishop Mulvey’, Bishop Mulvey walks with us to better understand fasting and put into practice. Fasting must begin he says “with knowing ourselves better.” From self-knowledge we enable ourselves to recognize the effects of temptation and sin. We then work to eliminate that temptation that leads to sin. Whether the sin is anger, pride, envy, or lying, we must fast from the sins that distort who we really are, allowing us to connect with God more deeply. Fasting, ultimately, leads us to knowing ourselves better and making room for God.
