The Blessed John Paul II High School Centurions begin the 2013 season on Friday, Aug. 30, against the Taft Greyhounds. Kick off will be at 7:30 p.m. at John Paul II H.S. Stadium located at 3036 Saratoga Boulevard.
Bishop Wm. Michael Mulvey of the Diocese of Corpus Christi will deliver the invocation prayer at 7:15 p.m. and Corpus Christi Mayor Pro Tem Mark Scott will throw the first football of the season.
Mario Vasquez heads up the football coaching staff this season in his inaugural year as head coach under Athletic Director Mario DeLeon. Vasquez has 21 years of football coaching experience.
His football team consists of seven seniors and 20 underclassmen. Three freshmen will start this game, highlighting the flourishing program. Standout players to watch this season are senior running back Joshua Gomez, junior quarterback Andrew Morgan and senior wide receiver Jonathan Andrade.
The Centurions play in the Texas Association of Private and Parochial Schools and begin district play at home against San Antonio Antonian on Oct. 11. Other district opponents include Austin St. Michaels, San Antonio Central Catholic, Brownsville St. Joseph and San Antonio St. Anthony.
