For most of us Catholics, the Lenten season is a time of fasting and some occasional feasts. Fr. Thomas Swierc, parochial vicar at St. Philip the Apostle Catholic Church, spoke eloquently on the subject at a recent Theology on Tap gathering at Sal’s Bronx Pizza, which also celebrated Mardi Gras.
Wearing gold beads and enjoying a Coke Zero, Fr. Thomas opened with the idea of true freedom being doing what we ought instead of whatever we want. He explained how fasting is very biblical, sharing how holy men and women of the Old Testament prayed and fasted when in dire need of special graces from God - that is why the Church recommends we unite our fasting with prayer, in this season of Lent and also when we have a serious intention.
He challenged his listeners to give up something hard for Lent so that the empty space would leave more room for God, and help us better appreciate the great feast of Easter and all the liturgical feasts we celebrate throughout the year.
Sofia Rodriguez, current president of YCA (Young Catholic Adults) said that for her, “Theology on Tap never fails to provide a wonderful opportunity for fellowship, thoughtful reflection and deeper insight into how I can live out my faith.”
Rebecca Luna, a parishioner at St. Andrews by the Sea, shared that “sometimes it’s hard to know what to give up or do for Lent.” She reflected that the talk helped her realize what the Lord was actually inviting her to do, which gave her simplicity and peace for the forty days ahead.
Connor Evans, a member of YCA who attends St. John of the Cross parish in Orange Grove, really enjoyed the talk. “I appreciated learning about the proper attitude towards fasting this Lent. It made me reflect on ways I can empty myself and create room in my heart for God .” The evening wrapped up with questions from the audience and slices of King Cake for all.
Several young adults plan to attend the upcoming Lenten Book Study, featuring The Lamb’s Supper by Scott Hahn.
