On Tuesday, Jan. 8, Father James Puthenparambil, pastor of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Mathis celebrated his 32nd ordination anniversary with a Mass of thanksgiving. In conjunction with his celebration and Vocation Awareness Week, the parish invited Sister Barbara Bluntzer, SP of the Sisters of Providence of St. Mary of the Woods to come and speak on vocations.
During his homily Father Puthenparambil spoke of his early education in India. He shared that in seventh grade a nun had asked him if he would ever consider becoming a priest. He credits this nun with planting the seed in him.
“To be a priest or a nun is a calling from God. Whatever marvels they do is not because of their merit but by the mercy and kindness of God,” Father Puthenparambil said.
He said “it is always spring in the heart of those who love God.”
“Those who respond to this vocation will be guided and strengthened by God as long as they stay in love. To be a priest means to serve God and his children,” he said.
Father Puthenparambil considers the parishes he serves as his family. He added that he is grateful to God for being a priest.
Sister Barbara explained that the diocese is in great need of priests, deacons, nuns and religious. She shared some of the ways that nuns serve the diocese. She encouraged parents to plant a seed in their children.
The parish honored Father Puthenparambil with a reception and dinner after the Mass. The Mathis High School Mariachi Band serenaded him as he entered the parish hall.
