Eight Incarnate Word Academy High School Level art students received high ratings at the regional Visual Art Scholastic Event (VASE) competition held on Feb. 21 at Del Mar College. Juniors Emily Adams, Francesca Bendas, Hannah Hall, Karina Melchor and Megan Santillan, and seniors Alexa Mora, Lois Pierce and Phobe Strain received a IV rating.
“This rating is the highest rating that a student can get,” IWA High School Level Art Teacher Whitney Gray said.
The art form and entry of each student is as follows: Bendas, colored pencil drawing, “Winter Blossom”; Pierce, graphite drawing, “Escape”; Santillan, pencil drawing, “Illuminate”; Adams, digital photography, “Snow Crab Special” and “Reflections”; Mora, digital photography, “Love Lost”; Strain, digital photography, “Reverie”; Pierce, altered book sculpture, “Phantasmagoria”; Hall, metal sculpture, “The Chad”; and Melchor, paper Mache sculpture, “Majestic”.
Pierce was selected to advance to compete in the state VASE competition from April 24-25, in Dallas.
The mission of the VASE is to recognize exemplary student achievement in the visual arts.
