As we continue our journey through the season of Lent, the three pillars of prayer, fasting, and almsgiving serve as signposts to guide our steps away from the darkness of sin and into the light of redemption. The Lenten Penance Service held on Monday, March 24, at St. John the Baptist Church in Corpus Christi offered those weary from the journey an opportunity for prayer, reflection, and reconciliation.
Fr. Richard Gonzalez, Pastor of St. John the Baptist Church, along with Parochial Vicar Fr. Carlos De La Rosa and Fr. Thomas Swierc, Parochial Vicar at sister parish St. Philip the Apostle Church, processed to the altar as the faithful gathered to begin the penance service. Fr. Richard offered words of encouragement to those who were present and spoke of the graces that the Sacrament of Reconciliation can bring. “In a great act of merciful love, God sent us His Son, Jesus, to set us free from sin and death,” said Fr. Richard.
After proclaiming the Gospel of Matthew, Fr. Richard delivered a homily in which he spoke of how we are not alone but gathered in oneness in the mercy of the Lord. He went on to say that even though we may constantly face the obstacle of sin, Jesus is always with us every step of the way.
The Communal Liturgy concluded with an examination of conscience. Then those present proceeded to individual confessions as Susan Etzler, the parish’s music director, played contemplative music on the piano and organ.
“We hope that those in attendance will have the opportunity to become closer to Jesus, to trust in His Divine Mercy through the Sacrament of Reconciliation, and to be healed and strengthened to look forward as we journey to the Easter celebrations,” said Fr. Richard. “I pray that throughout this Lenten season, we take the opportunity to delve deeper into our relationship with God,” he added, “appreciating the strength of the Father, the love of the Son, and the graces of the Holy Spirit.”
