“Shine Jesus’ light” was the motto of the Fr. Walsh Summer Camp for persons with disabilities and the Vacation Bible Day for children with disabilities and their siblings. Going on a rocket trip to different stars and planets, the participants learned how to bring Jesus’ light to the dark corners of our lives.
Around 100 adults participated in the two-day Summer Camp in the beautifully decorated cafeteria of Saint John Paul II High School. They enjoyed learning about Jesus, doing crafts and having fun with songs and dances. Many volunteers helped with the program or in the kitchen, making the days memorable for the campers. A talent show toward the end of the camp was a highlight for the participants.
Eleven children enjoyed the Vacation Bible Day. Asked how they could bring Jesus’ love to others, they immediately had ideas: “Giving a hug,” said one. “Helping around the house” was another answer. “Sharing,” said one boy, “talking to each other kindly,” another one.
For over 30 years, the Ministry & Life Enrichment for Persons with Disabilities Program at Catholic Charities of Corpus Christi has provided summer camps for individuals with intellectual or physical challenges. Celia Mendez, Program Manager of Ministry & Life Enrichment for Persons with Disabilities, organized the days and explained that the campers were very happy that all Covid restrictions were lifted this year. “The participants look forward to coming back each summer.”
