Almost 50 students from Our Lady of the Rosary Catholic School in Flour Bluff memorized hymns, prayers, recited the Pledge of Allegiance, sang the National Anthem, and performed skits for Bishop Michael Mulvey during a pastoral visit on Feb. 26.
The morning began with Mass in Our Lady of the Rosary Chapel concelebrated by Bishop Mulvey and Father Peter Martinez, pastor of St. Paul the Apostle Church.
The children participated in Mass by reciting their prayers and singing hymns. Kindergartner Jourdan Olaes and first grader Savannah Coon were readers for the First Reading and the responsorial Psalm during the Mass.
After Mass Bishop Mulvey visited with the children and was presented with a lei of hands made with colored-paper, which he donned around his neck.
Principal Sister María Begoña D. Divinagracia, OP and the Dominican Sisters with the order of Religious Missionaries of St. Dominic from the Spanish Province operate Our Lady of the Rosary School. The school promotes a "quality Catholic education" for students in pre-k 2 through second grade.
After giving and receiving a blessing from the children, Bishop Mulvey thanked them and advised them “every-night say, ‘God loves me’ and in the morning say, ‘I love God and I will follow Him.’”
The students wowed the bishop with songs praising God and rejoicing in His goodness. It was easy to see that students and staff were devoted to the school’s mission statement which was read aloud by students and staff, “Our Lady of the Rosary Catholic School strives to form the minds, hearts and souls of the students in the likeness of Christ. It integrates both faith and knowledge by means of nurturing and stimulating environment, enabling each child to perform at the highest level of his/her capacity as a unique child of God.”
