Bishop Wm. Michael Mulvey delivered a Christmas message and blessing to the people of the Diocese of Corpus Christi at a ceremony held at Catholic Charities on Wednesday, Dec. 19.
In his message Bishop Mulvey reminded those present, most of whom had come to receive Christmas food baskets for their families and toys for their children, of Jesus’s call “to give.” Giving applies to all of us, the bishop said.
After a reading of the Gospel by Msgr. Louis Kihneman, Vicar General of the diocese, and the prayers of petition by Sister Rose Madassery, executive director of the Mother Teresa Shelter, Bishop Mulvey gave his blessing to those assembled.
Linda Mckamie, Executive Director of Catholic Charities thanked all that made the day possible, including the members of her board of directors, the John & Marie Stella Memorial Foundation, HEB and Toys for Tots. She also recognized the presence of Nueces County Judge Lloyd Neal.
After the blessing, the distribution of food baskets and toys began and continued throughout the day. A second round of distributions was held on Thursday, Dec. 20. Some 300–400 people were helped.
Food baskets were also being distributed at the Corpus Christi Housing Authority and at various rural parishes and at the Duval County Sheriff’s Office. In addition, food was distributed throughout five Nueces colonias.
