The Corpus Christi Bar Association and the Diocese of Corpus Christi—along with many throughout others the United States and the world—will celebrate the traditional Red Mass to mark the opening of the judicial year and to emphasize the legal profession’s role in promoting justice and peace. Bishop Michael Mulvey will celebrate the Mass on Thursday, Sept. 15, at 6 p.m. at the Corpus Christi Cathedral.
The Red Mass, which dates to 13th century England, has the name because the celebrants wore red vestments, symbolizing the fire of the Holy Spirit's guidance to all who pursue justice. This tradition was introduced into the United States in 1928 in the church of St. Andrew in New York City. It was presided over by Cardinal Patrick Haves, who strongly encouraged and supported the involvement of the legal community in spreading the Word of God.
Judge Kevin Yeary of the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals will be this year's keynote speaker. Other special guests include Rabbi Ilan Emanuel of The Congregation Beth Israel and Pastor Greg Hackett of the First United Methodist Church. A reception and a judicial panel discussion will follow the Mass at the Cathedral's St. Joseph Hall.
The public is invited to join in this community-wide celebration. The Corpus Christi Cathedral is located at
505 N. Broadway in Corpus Christi.
