The Incarnate Word Academy High School Level swim and dive team competed in their first meet of the season on Oct. 3 at the Corpus Christi ISD Sprint Invitational. The Lady Angels received seventh place overall with a team score of 21.
“The Angels started off the new swim season with some terrific swims,” IWA Coach Mic Nelson said. “For many, this was their first high school swim meet. For others, it was their first meet ever.”
The IWA Lady Angels received seventh place in all three relays: 200 Medley Relay (Sara Beth Becker, Taren Moore, Payton Vicknair and Claire Walsh); 200 Freestyle Relay (Becker, Alyssa Milligan, Moore and Grace Walsh); and 400 Freestyle Relay (Milligan, Vicknair, Claire Walsh and Grace Walsh).
Junior Claire Walsh earned fourth place in the 100 freestyle with a time of 1:06.36 and seventh place in the 50 breaststroke.
There are many new faces on the Lady Angels’ Swim Team as several freshmen joined the squad. Grace Walsh received seventh place in the 200 freestyle and 10th place in the 100 individual medley; Vicknair received ninth place in the 50 fly and 11th place in the 100 individual medley; Moore received 10th place in the 25 freestyle and 17th place in the 50 breaststroke; Milligan received 18th place in the 50 freestyle and 26th place in the 50 backstroke; Hillary Aguilar received 22nd place in the 25 freestyle.
Becker, who is the Lady Angels’ team captain, came back much stronger this year. “She dropped over 11 seconds in her 100 free and just about 1.5 seconds in her 50 back,” Nelson said.
The IWA Angels boys team received placed fourth in the 400 freestyle relay (David Villarreal, Leo Lugo, Elijah Wolfe, and Will Yeager) and sixth place in the 200 Medley Relay (Villarreal, Lugo, Travis Moore and Wolfe).
Wolfe earned third place in 1-meter diving with a time of 164.55. Wolfe also received fourth place in the 25 freestyle, with a time of 11.60.
Lugo received sixth place in the 50 breaststroke with a time of 35.92 and ninth place in the 100 freestyle; Yeager received 11th place in the 50 freestyle and 14th place in the 50 breaststroke; freshman Travis Moore received 12th place in the 25 freestyle and 17th place in the 50 breaststroke; and Villarreal received 10th place in the 50 breaststroke and 13th place in the 50 freestyle.
“This was a great start to the swim season,” Nelson said.
The Angels’ and Lady Angels’ next swim meet will be Oct. 23 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Corpus Christi ISD Class Meet, which will be held at the Corpus Christi Natatorium.
