“Yes, this is what I want.” These were the words spoken by the four candidates of the St. Anthony of Padua Secular Franciscan Fraternity on September 23, 2023, the feast day of St. Padre Pio, as they professed to the rule of the Secular Franciscan Order. Fr. Joseph Nguyen celebrated the Mass of Profession at St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church.
The newly professed are Jesus Molina, Alicia Cardenas, Oscar Flores, and Deacon Michael Rauen. Following the Mass of Profession, a reception was held in the parish hall. It was attended by friends and family members of the professed and by Secular Franciscans from Franciscan fraternities in Laredo, San Antonio, and the Rio Grande Valley.
For those unfamiliar with the three Franciscan Orders, the First Order comprises men (priests and brothers) who live in community and take vows of chastity, obedience, and poverty (such as the Capuchins).
The second order is comprised of women who take the same vows and live in community (for example, The Poor Clares). Secular Franciscans (formerly known as the Third Order) live the charism of St. Francis in the secular world. In essence, profession to the Secular Franciscan Rule is a lifelong commitment to live the Gospel following the example of St. Francis of Assisi. Those who profess can be married, single, or even diocesan priests. In fact, several popes have been Secular Franciscans.
The process of becoming professed extends over approximately three years. This formation period entails three stages: Orientation, Inquiry, and Candidacy. Orientation involves learning about St. Francis and St. Clare and becoming acquainted with the local fraternity and its prayer life. Inquiry begins the formal formation period, with a greater depth of study into the Franciscan charism and history. Candidacy is a period of formation for permanent immersion into fraternity life.
Congratulations again to our four newly professed members. The St. Anthony of Padua Fraternity of Corpus Christi has been greatly enriched by their addition to our fraternal life.
