The 2012-2013 Diocesan Science Fair was held at Blessed John Paul II on Jan. 26. Students from kindergarten to eighth grade competed for the opportunity to go to the Coastal Bend Science Fair March 9.
The winners of the 2012-2013 Science Fair at from Kindergarten were: Sebastian Dionio from St. Patrick School, won first place for “Spread the Soap, Not the Germs;” Elizabeth Aldritch from St. Patrick, won second place for “How Flowers Drink;” Landon Anthony, from Incarnate Word Academy, won third place for “Magnets;” Mayah Garcia from Christ the King won fourth place for “Caffeine Excites the Heart and Makes it Beat Faster;” and Noah Galvan from Christ the King won fifth place for “Let it Pop;”
Winners from first grade were: Noah Sanchez from Central Catholic won first place for “Breath of Fresh Air;” Daniela Benavides from St. Joseph won second place for “Greasy Fingers;” Reece Perez from Holy Family won third place for “Does Aspirin Prolong the Life of Carnations;” Isaac Silva from St. Joseph won fourth place for “Tastes Like Chicken;” and Kevin Burnette from Our Lady of Perpetual Help won fifth place for “Popcorn Fever.”
Winners from second grade were: Kiernan Cruger from Incarnate Word Academy Elementary won first place on “Tsunamis- How Water Depth Affects Wave Velocity;” Abigail Rock from St. Patrick won second place for “Edible Explosions;” Alexis Ruiz from St. Patrick won third place for “Garbage Plants;” Erin Aceves from Christ the King won fourth place for “Tasting colors;” and Christian Trevino from St. Joseph won fifth place for “Zooming to the Finish Line.”
Winners from third grade were: Alexis Alaniz from St. Pius X won first place for “Once or Twice a Day;” Cade Bush from Incarnate Word Academy Elementary won second place for “Insulator Investigator;” Aidan Orines from St. Patrick won third place for “Amazing Marble;” Regan Hannigan from Incarnate Word Academy Elementary won fourth place for “What liquid Makes Plants Grow Best;” and Abigail Larkin from St. Patrick won fifth place for “Balloon Fest Fun Test.”
Winners from fourth grade were: Jacobe Ellison from Incarnate Word Academy Elementary won first place for “Power of Heat is Under Your Feet;” A J Carter from Sacred Heart in Rockport won second place for “Protecting Our Skin in the Sun;” Ellie Ostrom from St. Pius X won third place for “Soil Erosion;” Natalia Hinojosa from St. Patrick won fourth place for “Static Electricity;” Julia Creech from Incarnate Word Academy won fifth place for “Salty Salt;”
Winners from fifth grade were: Allison Duncan from St. Patrick won first place for “Breaking Bridges;” Kaila Orines from St. Patrick won second place for “Fire Away;” Charles Hornsby from Incarnate Word Academy Elementary won third place for “Tooth Decay is Not OK;” Sara Landa from Our Lady of Perpetual Help Academy won fourth place for “To Lie or Not to Lie;” and Timothy Nye from Incarnate Word Academy Elementary won fifth place for “Talk Text Crash!”
Winners from sixth grade were: Gabriella Barrera from Incarnate Word Academy Middle Level won first place for “To Eat or Not to Eat;” and Gabrielle Guernsey and Annelle Valadez from Our Lady of Perpetual Help Academy won second place for “What a Fat Burger;” Jacob Cuellar from St. Elizabeth in Alice won third place for “Acid Ice;” Abby Trevino from Bishop Garriga Middle Preparatory School won fourth place for “What Pain Relever Would You Take;” and Alexis Deeb from Bishop Garriga Middle Preparatory School won fifth place for Corrosion Commotion.”
Winners from seventh grade were: Savannah Bevalet from Incarnate Word Academy Middle Level won first place for “Wind Power;” Liam Holden from Our Lady of Perpetual Help Academy won second place for “Bumpy Roads;” Cristian De La Rosa and Cesar Landa from Our Lady of Perpetual Help Academy won third place for “The Big Bond Theory; Gabby Lopez from Bishop Garriga Middle Preparatory School won fourth place for “Brown Attack;” and Damien Villarreal won fifth place for “Balloon Race.”
Winners from the eighth grade were: Michael Rock from Incarnate Word Academy Middle Level won first place for “Ocean Currents Powering the Future;” Brandon Deeb from Bishop Garriga Middle Preparatory School won second place for “To Burn or Not to Burn;” Victoria Rangel from Incarnate Word Academy Middle Level won third place for “Don’t Let Looks Deceive You;” Erika Suniga-Graham from Our Lady of Perpetual Help Academy won fourth place for “Soil Bearing Capacities;” and Yesenia Falcon and Danielle Lu from Our Lady of Perpetual Help Academy won fifth place for “Out of Hot Water.”
Best in Show winner was Savannah Bevalet from Incarnate Word Academy Middle Level on “Wind Power.”
