St. Josephine Bakhita, born in 1869 in Sudan, was kidnapped and sold into slavery by Arab slave traders around 1877. Eventually converting to Catholicism and freed from slavery, she lived out the remainder of her life as a religious sister with the Canossian Daughters of Charity.

Venerable Fr. Augustus Tolton (1854-1897), a former slave, who was baptized and reared Catholic, became the first U.S. Roman Catholic priest publicly known to be black. He was recognized for eloquent sermons, a melodic singing voice, and the musical talent of playing the accordion.
