Summary: The Cathedral Concert Series celebrates the opening of its 40th season with a concert featuring "The Sacred Veil" — a major choral work by composer Eric Whitacre and poet/lyricist Charles Anthony Silvestri. The work tells a story of life, love and loss: Silvestri’s wife, Julie, died of ovarian cancer at age 36 in 2005, leaving two young children. Including texts from Silvestri, Whitacre and Julie herself, the intimate, compelling score tells a story of courtship, love, loss and the search for solace. Although inspired by this extraordinary and moving friendship, the piece does not mention Julie by name and shares a very human journey— one that so many of us can relate to. The piece is framed around the central concept that "whenever there is birth or death, the sacred veil between the worlds grows thin" and that our loved ones are never far from us. The concert features the Corpus Christi Chorale (corpuschristichorale.org) joined by members of the Cathedral choirs, accompanied by the Cathedral's music director Alex Oldroyd on piano and Dr. Carrie Pierce on cello. The Cathedral Concert Series provides meaningful and uplifting musical experiences to the people of south Texas. These performances are offered as a gift to the community by the Diocese of Corpus Christi with support from sponsors and patrons. We invite you to consider supporting this effort and to becoming a patron of the Cathedral Concert Series.
